Între 20 iunie şi 3 iulie are loc în Marea Britanie turneul de mare şlem de la Wimbledon. Câteva partide din prima zi a competiţiei au fost amânate din cauza ploii.
"Două lire jumate! Taxi pentru două lire jumate de persoană!"
Oferta este făcută de un bărbat masiv cu părul vopsit în aşa fel încât capul îi seamănă cu o uriaşă minge de tenis.
Mă aflu în faţa staţiei de metrou Southfields şi ca să ajung la terenurile de la Wimbledon am două opţiuni: fie străbat pe jos cei câţiva kilometri până la arene, fie îi accept oferta.
Mai sunt vreo 30 de minute până când încep primele meciuri şi nu vreau sa ratez nimic, aşa că mă îndrept spre taxiuri fără să mă gândesc vreo clipă că într-o zi de competiţie traficul trebuie să fie supraaglomerat.
După un sfert de oră sunt încă pe bancheta din spate a maşinii înghesuit între alte patru persoane şi privesc coloanele de pietoni care par că se deplasează cu viteza luminii.
Aş vrea să cobor, dar uşa este pe partea opusă şi ar trebui ca toţi ceilalţi să coboare şi ei pentru a-mi face loc.
Renunţ şi privesc în continuare pe geam la parada spectatorilor.
Unii sunt la costum, alţii îşi arată genunchii prin găurile din blugi.
Unii au pălării elegante, alţii îşi poartă şepcile cu cozorocul la spate.
Trec deopotrivă cupluri mai în vârstă care se ţin de mână sau tineri agitaţi care profită de regula care spune că la Wimbledon ai voie să vii de acasă cu două beri.
Mă întreb dacă sunt fani ai tenisului sau au fost atraşi doar de renumele competiţiei.
Probabil că puţin din fiecare.
Între timp, s-a făcut 12 fără 5 şi se vede poarta de acces.
12 lire, drumul cu taxiul până la Wimbledon
Facem repede cheta şi îi dăm şoferului cele 12 lire şi jumătate pe care i le datorăm.
Trec şi peste filtrul de securitate şi intru.
Sunt la Wimbledon şi nici nu am timp să mă dezmeticesc că o voce baritonală îmi zguduie auzul: "Make way! Make way!"
Mă întorc şi dau nas în nas cu Venus Williams.
E însoţită de patru agenţi de securitate care o conduc către terenul numărul 2 unde e programat meciul cu uzbeca Amanmuradova.
Tichetul pe care il am nu-mi permite accesul pe niciuna din arenele centrale aşa că mă îndrept spre terenul 10, unde ajung tocmai la timp pentru a o vedea pe Sorana Cârstea câştigând primul game în faţa franţuzoaicei Parmentier.
Şi singurul de altfel, pentru că Sorana pierde primul set cu 6-1.
În partea a doua e din ce în ce mai nervoasă.
Comentează deciziile arbitrului şi se dojeneşte singură pentru greşelile pe care le face.
Anulează trei mingi de meci, dar cedează până la urmă cu 6-3 şi repetă contraperformanţa de anul trecut când a părăsit turneul tot din prima zi.
Imaginea e salvată de Alexandra Dulgheru care trece lejer de americanca Jill Craybas cu 6-2, 6-4, în timp ce Monica Niculescu nu are milă de austriaca Bammer pe care o învinge cu 6-1, 6-1 în ultimul meci oficial susţinut de aceasta.
La băieţi, Victor Hănescu îl domina pe cehul Pospisil pe care îl conducea cu 6-4, 2-1 în momentul în care meciul a fost întrerupt din cauza ploii.
Terenurile, dotate cu o alarmă pentru precipitaţii
În mai puţin de 30 de secunde, toate terenurile de joc sunt acoperite de prelate, iar pe arena centrală se trage acoperişul mobil.
Înaintea turneului unul din organizatori îmi spunea că îşi doreşte să plouă pentru că acoperişul e gata de doi ani, dar nu au apucat să-l folosească niciodată până acum.
În cazul în care vă întrebaţi cum de organizatorii nu sunt luaţi niciodată prin surprindere de precipitaţii, ei bine, acest lucru se datorează unui radar amplasat pe una dintre arene, care trage semnalul de alarmă cu cinci minute înainte de venirea ploii.
Ploaie care a sporit veniturile celor de la Wimbledon, pentru că barurile si restaurantele au fost luate cu asalt, iar pentru o caserolă cu faimoasele căpşuni britanice, care costau cât o călătorie cu taxiul, se stătea la coadă mai bine de un sfert de oră.
Ştiu sigur pentru că am înfruntat ploaia dornic de a mă număra printre cei care consumă la fiecare ediţie aproape 30 de mii de kilograme de căpşuni.
N-am apucat, însă, să savurez acest moment pentru că anunţul crainicului a dat semnalul de plecare:
"Doamnelor şi domnilor, ploaia nu pare că se va opri într-un timp foarte scurt şi cel mai probabil meciurile nu vor mai fi reluate în această seară. Vă vom ţine la curent!"
